Typical Dock - Decking Types

Pressure-Treated Wood Decking: This is the classic material used to build docks. The preservation process that this wood undergoes prevents rot and bug infestation. However, this doesn’t stop weathering and corrosion; therefore, periodic professional maintenance is important with wood docks.

Ipe Dock Decking: Premium Ipe lumber is probably the most beautiful and durable decking option. To preserve the dark rich color of Ipe or any other hardwood dock, the surface needs to be cleaned and oiled regularly; otherwise, it will fade to an unattractive silver-gray hue. But hardwoods are generally robust and resistant to water and bugs, which makes them somewhat easier to maintain.

Composite Dock Decking: This is made from boards that are fabricated from wooden and synthetic fibers. Typically these decks require very little maintenance. However, they have fewer finish options compared to pressure-treated wood.

Vinyl Dock Decking: This is one of the more modern options though more expensive. When compared to pressure-treated wood and composite decking, it’s more long-lasting and requires almost no maintenance.

Non Standard Docks

Articulating Docks

  • Excellent choice for avoiding damage from ice as it can be lifted during cold month
  • A good and very flexible choice when permit restrictions or various environment needs must be considered and / or require non standard configurations.
  • Many incorporate U shape layouts providing additional storage
  • Multiple standard decking options available. Generally a steel truss base.

Cantilever Docks

  • If permitting restricts traditional or articulating docks, a cantilever dock may be appropriate.
  • Avoids icing damage using a counterbalance weight system that pulls the dockl parallel to the water, standing vertically when not in use.
  • Usually supported by a steel frame with a variety of decking options

Cleaning, sanding and staining your dock are the most common ways for preserving and preventing damage. But what if your dock stains, warps, rots or gets discolored? You need a professional dock repair service and Tucker Marine Construction has you covered.
